On Sunday, we will see a first-time champion in NCAA Division I women’s basketball, as Angel Reese and LSU will meet Caitlin Clark and Iowa for all the marbles in Dallas (3:30 pm ET, ABC).
We went into the Final Four with the prospect of an all-SEC championship game and a potential perfect season and back-to-back national titles for South Carolina.
But behind 41 points and eight assists from Clark, Iowa (31-6) shocked the college basketball world and the heavily favored Gamecocks with a 77-73 win.
As a result, the Hawkeyes, who are in the Final Four for the second time after making their previous appearance in 1993, are now a win away from a first-ever championship.
Standing in their way is LSU (33-2), who overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half to upend Virginia Tech 79-72 in Friday’s first semifinal.
It has taken Hall of Fame coach Kim Mulkey just two seasons to take LSU back to the Final Four for the first time since 2008 and into the program’s first national championship game in the NCAA era. A big reason for that is Reese, who put up 24 points and 12 rebounds in the win over the Hokies.
Who will cut down the nets at the American Airlines Center on Sunday? Read on for our LSU vs Iowa prediction and picks.

Can LSU Cool Down Clark to Claim a Championship?
After a second-round upset to Creighton ended Iowa’s Final Four aspirations in last year’s tournament, the Hawkeyes are guaranteed their best-ever finish no matter how Sunday’s game turns out.
That is largely thanks to Clark, who is delivering like stars of her level are expected to on this stage.
After putting up 41 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists to lead the Hawkeyes over Louisville in the Elite Eight, Clark dropped another 41-piece to help secure the stunning upset over South Carolina.
In the NCAA Tournament, Clark has had only one poor shooting performance, which was a 6 of 17 showing in the second round against Georgia.
In each of the other four games, she has bested her shooting percentage for the season, which now sits at 47.5% after she went 15 of 31 from the field against South Carolina.
Caitlin Clark in the 2023 NCAA Tournament
- PPG: 32.2
- RPG: 5.8
- APG: 10.4
- FG%: 50.5% (52 of 103)
- 3PT%: 42.9% (24 of 56)
- FT%: 89.2% (33 of 37)
Can LSU limit her impact enough to keep Iowa from scoring at a high clip?
Entering the Final Four, South Carolina had allowed 70 or more points only three times all season. But Clark and the Hawkeyes were able to hit that mark for the 35th time in 37 games this season.
That occurred even with Clark going only 5 of 17 from three after shooting 48.7% (19 of 39) from outside in her first four NCAA Tournament games.
LSU gave up 70 or more points for just the sixth time all season in the semifinal showdown with Virginia Tech. But only 13 of those points came in a final quarter in which the Tigers flipped the game with a 22-3 run and outscored the Hokies by 16.
After some struggles on offense in the tournament, LSU turned it on offensively when it mattered against Virginia Tech, reaching a tournament high in points.
But they won’t want to find themselves in the same kind of game with Iowa.
Against the Gamecocks, the Hawkeyes scored the game’s first points a little over two minutes in and then led most of the rest of the way, with the only exception a few lead changes that occurred in a back-and-forth end to the first half.

Prediction for LSU vs Iowa: Iowa to win

Every now and then, a player will put a team on their back and do things in a championship setting that stick long in the memory.
That is what Clark has done for Iowa in this year’s NCAA Tournament, especially in her last two games. At this point, anything short of a title will be a major disappointment.
Similar can be said for Reese. She has tallied five consecutive double-doubles and is averaging 22.6 PPG and 16.2 RPG in the tournament.
Which of these stars will lead their team to a championship on Sunday? I’m rolling with Clark and the Hawkeyes to take a title back to Iowa City.
Betting against Kim Mulkey in a national title game may be a risky move when she is 3-0 in them. However, I don’t think Clark will be denied her shining moment.
Initially, I was going to opt for the ML here over the spread, but at -150 and shorter, MLs are typically out as a decent value option. This one could get tight, but only two of Iowa’s 31 wins this season have come by three or fewer points (an 84-81 OT win at Michigan State on January 18 and an 86-85 win over Indiana on February 26).
